[OLUG] hub

I have two computers networked with a crossover cable just fine, one running
Slink and the other Redhat.  I just removed the crossover cable and added
patch cables and a hub.  Now I can't ping between machines anymore.  The
power to the hub is on.  Is there some special configuration or addition to
the kernel that a person has to set up in order to use a hub?
