You aren't trapped - SuSE has Gnome, you just have to look for it (though you don't have to
look hard).

Fire up YaST, goto Choose/Install Packages, Change/Create Configuration, and choose the
option that says (*gasp*) "gnm - GNOME - GNU Network Object Model Environment".
