You're not alone.  I've been plauged by this for years.  It's not so bad
anymore though.  I'm running 4.7-1.1 and can get around most Java pages,
but some still kill it off.  It happened this evening at
http://www.kryotech.com   I usually just turn off Java in the
preferences and go back to the site.  I think that some of it was
because of Shockwave Flash stuff.  I've installed the plugin and that
fixed that particular problem.  The plugin almost works even!

Try turning off Java in the browser and javascript in the mail program. 
You won't be missing much.
